Success Over Survival:  What Every Business Owner Needs to Know (Part 2)

The Time to Empower Yourself for the Future is Now!

The thought of retirement can, understandably, be a scary one.  Especially when you read the following 10 Scary Facts About Retirement:

  • 1.  Only 22% of workers are very confident they will have enough money in retirement (Employee Benefit Research Institute's 25th annual "Retirement Confidence Survey")
  • 2.  According to recent Congressional testimony, 45% of Americans have saved exactly NOTHING.
  • 3.  The magnitude of the financial challenges that will be faced by upcoming retirees will not have been seen since the Great Depression.
  • 4.  Women will face even greater challenges than men, because we live longer (about 20 years beyond age 65) and make less.
  • 5.  Only 1 out of 6 employers offers health insurance coverage to retirees. Some lucky retirees have 2 things going for them:  Medicare and long-term care insurance.
  • 6.  The average 65-year-old couple can expect to pay $220,000 in out-of-pocket costs for health care - and that's without getting hit with a catastrophic illness or injury.
  • 7.  The projected annual growth rate for health care spending through 2022 is 5.8%.  If you're supposed to live on a 4% withdrawal rate (though 2% is now recommended) from your retirement nest egg, where does that leave you?
  • 8.  Once Medicare kicks in, the average retiree can expect it to pay just 62% of their health care expenses.
  • 9.  That leaves, you guessed it, a 38% deficit you get to pay when you file a claim with Medicare.
  • 10.  If you don't have long-term care insurance, and it turns out you need it, you could pay $200,000+ for a single year in a skilled nursing facility or a high-end assisted living facility (especially if costs continue to escalate).

(Statistics above are from a new report from the National Association of Government Defined Contribution Administrators, Inc. or NAGDCA.)
